CHURCH CEREMONIES:

The following are the arrangments for Masses in the parish over the rest of this week: Thursday, November 2 (All Souls Day): Bruree Mass 9.30 am Rockhill Mass 6.00 pm.

Saturday November 4 Rockhill Mass 6.00 pm - We remember our parishioners faithful departed by inviting one member of each family to carry a candle to the altar at Mass - the family will take the candle home with them after Mass.

Sunday, November 5 Bruree Mass 11.30 am - We remember our parishioners faithful departed by inviting one member of each family to carry a candle to the altar at Mass - the family will take the candle home with them after Mass.

Cemetery Prayers: Prayers for  the deceased will be said at the cemeteries in the parish on Sunday, November 12, as follows: Bruree New Cemetery 2.00 pm, Bruree Old Cemetery 3.00 pm, Templemary, Howardstown 3.45 pm.

 

SCHOOL NEWS: 

Gaelic Football Bruree School had teams in both South Premier School Finals last Thursday. The girls football team came up against a very strong Bruff team. Following a well contested game, the Bruff girls emerged as winners. Bruree and Bruff again met in the Boys Premier Football Final. Both teams battled to the final whistle, with the Bruree School boys, captained by John O'Connell, coming out on top on a score 1-3 to 0-0. Next up is the County Semi-Final on Tuesday, November 7, in Neville Park, Rathkeale, at 12.30 pm. St. Patrick's, Bruree will play the champions of the West.

 

AGM:

Bruree GAA will hold its Annual General Meeting on Friday, November 24, at 8.00 pm sharp in Bruree Hall.

 

QUIZ:

Rockhill Bruree Community Council will hold a Table Quiz in the Hotel Bar, Bruree, on this Saturday night, November 4, starting at 9.00 pm. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

 

SAVE OUR ROOF:

Fundraising continues to raise the funds necessary to match to recently announced €50,000+ grant towards to replacement of the roof of our Community Centre.

Ongoing fundraising consists of the following:

Clothes Collection- You may drop off any unwanted clothes as this collection is ongoing over the year.

November 10 - Poker Classic jointly with Bruree Golf Society at the Central Bar

December 3 - Christmas Fair - Take a stand or visit the Community Centre on the day and Santa will be attending!!!

PARENT & TODDLER:

The Bruree Parent and Toddler group continues every Wednesday in the Community Hall, Bruree. The group meets from 10.00 to 12.00 midday and all parents and guardians are welcome to come along.

 

BADMINTON:

Bruree Badminton Club continues training on Monday and Wednesday nights from 8.30 to 10.30 pm. Detail on times/days for juveniles to follow.

 

FRIARS GATE: 

The Soulscapes series runs throughout the month of November featuring intriguing speakers like John Lonergan, Dr. Robyn Rowland, Helena Close and Diarmuid Lyng.  On Friday, November 3, Friars Gate hosts award winning comedy, Promise and Promiscuity, performed by Penny Ashton.  On Friday, November 10, the theatre will host the acclaimed Mary & Me, written and performed by Irene Kelleher.  Mary Murray (Love/Hate) performs No Smoke without Fire on Friday, December 1, while on Wednesday, December 8, Kilmallock welcomes back the Abba Forever show.

 

HALLOWEEN PARTY NIGHT:

A Halloween Party Night takes place at the Devon Inn Hotel on Friday, November 3. A night full of good food and wine, music, craic, fun, games and lots of prizes and surprises, with competitions for best dressed, best masquerade mask, best Halloween outfit and much more! Dance the night away to Keep in Touch band and DJ. Special guests on the night are Elma, Fionnbar and Jema Walsh of Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation. All proceeds go to Milford Hospice and The Mid Western Cancer Foundation, two worthy cancer charities in the Mid West. Tickets are €55 per person. SYMPATHY:

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Liam O'Sullivan, Buttevant, and  Ann Fitzgibbon, Athlacca, who died recently.

 

POKER CLASSIC:

Bruree Golf Society and Bruree Hall committee will hold a Poker Classic at the Central Bar, Bruree, on Friday, November 10th, starting at 9.00 pm. Tickets are €20 and are available from members of both of the committees. There will be a draw for anyone who buys a ticket and cannot attend!

 

LOCAL RADIO:

Tickets for the West Limerick 102FM 50/50 Draw are now on sale throughout West Limerick or from the station's offices in Newcastle West (069 66200) for next week's draw. They cost just €2 each. Half the proceeds will be distributed as prizes each week. Recent winners were Peg Heffernan, Ardagh  (€318) and Grace O'Connor, c/o Beauty Bliss, Rathkeale, (€388). Tickets are available locally from John Harrold. Support your community station!

 

SILVER CIRCLE:

St Patrick's N.S., Bruree, are holding their annual Silver Circle Draw for 5 weeks, starting on Tuesday, November 7. Total cost for the 5 weeks entry is only €10.

 

HOLY SOULS: 

The Holy Souls special day in Emmanuel House, Clonfert, takes place on Sunday, November 19, under Bishop Kirby. This is a full day of prayer for the Holy Souls and there will be an Adoration Mass and confessions. It will be led by Eddie Stones, who will give a talk, assisted by a team of priests. The bus will pick up in Bruree at 8.15 am and it is filling up fast. Book early and name to accompany fare of €20. Contact Ann Mockler (063-90564) for further details. All are welcome.

 

TRAINING: 

Ballyhoura Development is providing a wide range of training and workshops this autumn for local community groups, their officers, committee members or directors, and volunteers. Here’s what’s coming up over the next number of weeks:

LOCAL VOCATIONS:

An important book on religious vocations in the diocese of Limerick by Brother John Feheney will be launched at Don Bosco Hall, Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Plassey Park Road, Milford, Castletroy, Limerick, on Sunday, November 12, at 3.00 pm in the afternoon. Under the general title of Good Seed, Fertile Soil, Volume One of this series, covering the 26 parishes of West Limerick, was published in November 2016. Now, one year later, Brother John is launching Volume Two, covering Limerick city and parishes in the south of the diocese. The book is in dictionary format, with the names of 1,000 individuals arranged alphabetically. The priests included were attached to 50 different dioceses, not a few from dioceses in the USA, Australia, UK and Scotland. Religious included in the book belonged to more than 90 different religious congregations. There entries from virtually every parish in the city and south of the diocese. Readers are invited to attend the book launch. Copies of both Volume 1 and Volume 2, each costing a modest €20, will later be on sale at Celtic Bookshop (061-401155), 2 Rutland Street, Limerick.

 

MACKEY DRAW:

Congratulations to Michael, David & John Sexton on winning €250 in the Mackey Draw. They won with Bruree GAA.

 

CHRISTMAS FAIR:

The Community Hall committee will hold a Christmas Fair on Sunday, December 3, from 12.00 to 4.00 pm. There will be a children's art/craft competition, stalls, raffles and, of course, Santa himself will attend. Anyone who would like to book a stall should contact 086-0565544.

May, 1854: In the matter of the estate of John Mason, Walker Jackson Mason, and Myles Jackson Mason, 1 Owners;Exparte, Sir John Franks, Knight, deceased, continued in the name of John Franks, Dame Sarah Franks and Catherine Montgomery, Petitioner.

The Commissioners will, on Friday, the 30th day of June, 1854, at the hour of Twelve o'clock, at Noon, at their Court, Henrietta Street, Dublin, set up and sell in four separate lots, by public auction, The Fee Simple Estate of Cappanahane, otherwise Cappanahow, otherwise Cappananty, with its subdenominations of Farm Clarke, part of the Ordnance Townland of Cappanahane, situate in the Parishof Cormohide, Barony of Upper Connelloe, and County of Limerick, containing 541a. 3r. 35p. statute measure, and producing a net yearly rental of the annual value of £391 17s. 0d., after deducting Tithe Rentcharge payable thereout, amounting to the sum of £17 12s 8d.

Lot I—Fee Simple. Part of the said Lands of Cappanahane, containing 77a. 1r. 35p., statute measure, and producing a net annual rent of £51 7s.5d. This lot consists of good land, chiefly in grass, and capable of much improvement.

Lot 2—Fee Simple. Part of the said Lands of Cappanahane, containing 147a. 3r. 10p. statute measure; and producing a net annual rent of £92 Is. 7d. This lot consists of some good meadow and tillage land, and a large portion of light land capable of much improvement, with comparatively small outlay.

Lot 3—Fee Simple. Part of the said lands of Cappanahane, containing 120a. lr. 15p., statute measure, and producing a net annual rent of £108 6s. 7d. This lot consists chiefly of prime land, well suited for agricultural purposes, whether meadow, dairy, tillage, or feeding.

Lot 4—Fee Simple. Part of the said lands of Cappanahane, containing 196a. lr. I5p. statute measure, and producing a net annual rent, or being of the annual value of £140 1s. 5d. This lot is similar in quality, to Lot 3, and on it stands Cappanahane House, for many years the residence of the Mason family, a spacious and substantial building, with suitable offices. The Demesne is well and tastefully timbered, and the lot presents a desirable investment to any party requiring a residence — The Bog of Cappanahane is comprisedin, and will be conveyed with this lot, subject in such rights of Turbary thereon as mentioned or referred to in the General Particulars and Conditions of Sale. Dated this 19th day of May, 1854.

January, 1954: Connradh Na Gaedhilge - Bruree Gaelic League Branch Seventh Annual Concert (In Aid Of Rockhill Church Fund) In Maigue Hall, Bruree, Sunday, January 31. Contributing artistes include J. Penny, A. Tuohy, A. Nolan, M. O Cinneide, C. Ni Chuis, M. Barrett, A. Benson. Short address by Rev. Fr. G. Wall, C.C, St. Mary's, Limerick. Drawing of prizes (Rockhill Church Fund Raffle). Commencing 7 30 P M , Sharp.

February, 1950: Bruree, Co. Limerick, had its first broadcast on Sunday night, when Question Time in Irish was relayed by Radio Eireann from The Maigue Hall. The winner was Mr. Mannix Joyce of Bruree and the runner-up prize was divided between Mr. D. Mullins, Dromcollogher and Miss Peggie Hayes, DrumcolIogher, who tied. The Question Time formed part of the annual concert organised by the Bruree GaelicLeague Branch and there was a very large attendance.

April, 1926: Proposed reconstruction of damaged portion of Garrouse Bridge. The Limerick County Council are prepared to receive tenders for the above work in accordance with plans and specification to be seen in the County Surveyor's Office (East Division), 82 O'Connell Street, Limerick. Tenders in sealed envelopes endorsed “Garrouse Bridge”, to be lodged with me not later than 1 o'clock p.m. on Friday, 30th inst. The lowest or any tender not necessarily aceepted.

 

COTTAGE MARKET:

This Saturday, November 4th, a lovely day out is guaranteed at The Cottage Market, Kilmallock. The market takes place in The People's Hall, Kilmallock, from 11.00 am to 2.30 pm, featuring 25 stalls with local people selling homegrown,  homemade and handcrafted items. It's a great place to buy a gift, or a little treat for yourself, from gorgeous crochet scarves, to fairy garden accessories, to handmade skincare products. There are food stalls selling scrumptious treats, as well as lunch items such as soup and quiches. You can finish the day off with a cup of tea and a slice of cake, which is available at a nominal price of €2 (funds raised from the tea stall go back into the running of this community market). All are welcome. We'd love to see lots of people coming out to support the market in the new venue of The People's Hall, Kilmallock.

 

COMMEMORATION:

The Hogan/Ryan/Lynch Cumann will hold the Annual Liam Lynch Commemoration on Sunday, November 5th, at 1.30 pm at the monument in Anglesboro. Guest speakers are Liadh Ni Riada, M.E.P. and Senator Paul Gavin, Sinn Fein. Others in attendance will be Maurice Quinlivan T.D. and many other T.D’s and Councillors from all over Munster. We would also like to welcome the local Liam Lynch Pipe Band, and the Colour Party from Cork. A member of the Lynch Family will once again lay the wreath in honour of General Liam Lynch. On behalf of the Hogan/Ryan/Lynch Cumann we would like to thank Anglesboro Community Centre for the use of the hall for the commemoration where refreshment will be served after, also the people will have the opportunity to speak with the elected representatives of Sinn Fein. The Commemoration parade will start at 1.00pm outside the hall in Anglesboro and a short walk to the Liam Lynch monument where this great man will be honoured.
